Internal Family Systems (IFS)

Internal Family Systems (IFS) is a therapeutic approach that believes in the multifaceted nature of the mind. This innovative model suggests that our psyche is composed of multiple sub-personalities or “parts,” each with distinct characteristics, desires, and perspectives. IFS is rooted in the idea that the mind is naturally multiple and that everyone has a core or ‘Self’ that is the essence of who they are. The Self is the individual’s seat of consciousness around which are various parts that can be protective, vulnerable, or even wounded. These parts can become extreme or burdened, especially due to traumatic experiences.

Who could benefit from IFS?

IFS is particularly effective for people coping with:

  • Trauma and PTSD
  • Anxiety and Depression
  • Substance use
  • Eating disorders

What is the treatment process like?

The therapist first seeks to help clients access their ‘Self,’ a place of compassion, confidence, and calmness. Then the therapist will help the client to learn to identify and understand their various parts, exploring their roles and how they influence the individual’s thoughts, emotions, and behaviors.

How does IFS work?

Once someone has identified their Self and their various parts, they are encouraged to form non-judgmental relationships with each part, fostering understanding and collaboration. IFS views every part as having positive intent, even if its methods might be problematic. This fosters self-compassion. Through dialogue with these parts, especially the wounded ones, people can release emotional burdens and heal traumas. Over time, parts learn to trust the Self’s leadership, creating a harmonious internal system.

How effective is IFS?

IFS offers a comprehensive exploration of the psyche, allowing people to address a multitude of issues and concerns. Clients find empowerment in discovering and leading from their Self. By directly addressing and healing traumas, IFS can result in profound transformations.
