Narrative Therapy

Narrative Therapy, rooted in postmodernist thought, Narrative Therapy revolves around the concept that our identities and realities are shaped by the stories we tell about ourselves and our experiences. This therapeutic approach emphasizes that people are not solely defined by their stories, but rather, they have the agency to rewrite and redefine them.

Who could benefit from Narrative Therapy?

Narrative Therapy can help with:

  • Traumatic experiences
  • Depression, anxiety, and identity crises
  • Relationship challenges
  • Coping with cultural or societal pressures, prejudices, or expectations

What is the treatment process like?

The therapist and client work together to “externalize” problems, viewing them as separate from the individual. This process shifts the focus from “I am the problem” to “I have a problem.”

How does Narrative Therapy work?

Narrative Therapy seeks to separate people from problem-saturated narratives and collaboratively rewrite stories that align with their values and preferred outcomes. Clients are encouraged to identify moments or “sparkling events” that don’t fit into the dominant problem narrative. These moments are then woven into a new, more empowering narrative.

How effective is Narrative Therapy?

Narrative Therapy is versatile and has been successfully utilized for a myriad of concerns. By understanding how specific narratives have influenced one’s life and behaviors, and recognizing the broader systems, norms, or societal influences that might have shaped these stories, clients have the agency to be the authors of their own lives, emphasizing strengths, values, and capabilities. New narratives are often documented in letters or certificates, and milestones in the therapy process are celebrated.
