Pride Month is a time for celebration, reflection, and community, and for Lynn Newman, LMFT, it’s deeply personal.
As a licensed marriage and family therapist at Foresight Mental Health, Lynn brings both professional expertise and lived experience to her work with LGBTQIA+ clients. She remembers attending her first Pride parade as a teenager, back when the acronym was simply “LGB.” She describes it as a liberating experience that shaped her understanding of community, visibility, and belonging.
“The Pride community is not underground anymore,” she reflects. “It’s humans claiming their right to coexist on this planet as they desire.”
Lived Experience as a Foundation for LGBTQIA+ Affirming Care
For Lynn, becoming a therapist was instinctive. Having experienced discrimination firsthand, she developed a deep well of empathy that now informs every client relationship. She is passionate about creating spaces that are safe, transparent, and genuinely inclusive, not as a professional checkbox, but as a personal commitment.
When working with LGBTQIA+ clients, Lynn leads with openness. She asks inclusive, open-ended questions, remains mindful of her own biases, and, when clinically appropriate, proactively shares her own identity as a gay woman. “I’ve found that it tears down fears and resistance and fuels rapport almost immediately,” she says. “Then we get to work.”
Her approach to affirming care is grounded in respect: make no assumptions, promote normalcy, and never overemphasize a client’s gender identity in ways that feel othering.
